The College of Social Sciences (CSS) was established in December 2002 when the University of the Philippines (UP) Baguio became the seventh constituent university of the UP System.

Formerly the Social Sciences Division, it has offered its BA Social Sciences program since 1967 in pursuit of the university’s mandate to provide quality tertiary instruction in the Cordillera and Northern Luzon. The Management Sciences Division, which has also been offering its Master of Management program, merged with it in 2002 following the reorganization of academic programs and administrative units of UP Baguio.

At present, CSS is configured into three departments and an institute: the Department of Anthropology, Sociology, and Psychology (DASP), the Department of Economics and Political Science (DEPS), the Department of History and Philosophy (DHPh), and the Institute of Management (IM).

CSS offers curricular, research, and extension programs that are interdisciplinary, socially engaged, ethically committed, and relevant to the region and the nation. How do I submit an application?

Traditionally, prospective UP students are screened through the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT). It is held once a year in the different constituent units of the University, as well as in select examination centers all over the country. The applications are filed prior to the date of the examinations.

 

In early 2023, the UP Office of Admissions announced the comeback of the UPCAT. Registration for UPCA 2024 opened in March 2023 and closed in April.

What are the degree courses offered by the College of Social Sciences?

The College of Social Sciences offers two undergraduate degrees, the Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and the Bachelor of Science in Management Economics. The BASS program follows a major-minor scheme and offers major disciplines in Anthropology, Economics and History, as well as minor disciplines in Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology.

When should I apply?

The BA Social Sciences program admits UPCA/UPCAT qualifiers during the 1st semester of the academic year. Transfer students and UP Baguio students who would like to shift to the BASS program shall be governed by existing University/College rules and regulations.

What is the tuition rate?

The University of the Philippines Baguio is one of the universities that is covered by the Zero Tuition Fee Law that is under the Republic Act No. 10931 or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act. This was signed into law on August 3, 2017, enabling students to access free education at the tertiary level. Upon admission, you are automatically eligible for four years worth of free tuition.

 

As the national university, UP is funded by the Philippine government. With this, the tuition fees of UP students are minimal. Added to this, UP students are also able to access other support services which would further defray the cost of your education. Through the Student Learning Assistance System, you can avail discounted tuition fees to full tuition fee waivers, plus cash subsidies, according to your individual income brackets

What financial assistance programs are available to UP students?

The Office of Student Financial Assistance provides financial assistance programs, scholarship opportunities and learning assistance packages for students of the University. Formally known as the Socialized Tuition Office, the OSFA continues to perform its function as the policy and coordinating body for student financial assistance programs in UP.

Where and when do I see my application status?

Check the UP Admissions website for announcements on the application results. You will need the same email account that you used for application to view your application results. If you qualify for admission to UP, register according to the instructions provided by the college or unit to which you have been accepted.
