Congratulations Prof. Math Luga!

Congratulations Prof. Math Luga on your new publication in the latest issue of The Cordillera Review (TCR), with the article titled, “The Urbanization of Baguio: The Gold City of the Orient, 1929-1941”.

The study takes after the McCoy and De Jesus’ patterns in studying local societies in the Philippines, which examines how global trade affected local transformations. The study particularly narrates how the growth of mining industry shaped the urban character of Baguio City which strengthened its service-oriented industries and laid foundation for the city’s development as a services hub for Northern Luzon.

Prof. Jose Mathew Luga is a History professor under the College of Social Sciences’ Department of History and Philosophy. He finished his undergraduate degree on BA Social Sciences (Major in History) in UP Baguio, and his MA in History in UP Diliman.

His research interests are local histories and life histories during the Philippine Revolution and the Japanese Occupation. He has also been awarded the 2021 Gawad Tsanselor Most Outstanding Junior Faculty for UP Baguio.

Some of the subjects he teaches is Hist 1 Philippine History, Hist 100 Ancient Civilizations, Hist 102 History of Modern Europe, Hist 154 History of Southeast Asia and Hist 116 Philippine Nationalism.
